ROSWELL, NEW MEXICO - Episodes 3.12 and 3.13 bring season 3 to a close

Roswell, New Mexico - Episode 3.12 “I Ain’t Goin’ Out Like That”
Written by Isabel Nelson & Danny Tolli
Directed by Lance Anderson
Season 3 finale

by Emily Maesar, Staff Writer

We’re in a series of starting right where we left off, and I’m very thankful for that. So, we open the penultimate episode of season three with Jones just hanging out with everybody in his mindscape. Nobody can lie to him there, while he makes attempts to pit them against each other. Classic villain stuff, you know? Isobel is able to push through enough that she grabs her alien sword and kicks them all out of the mindscape. So much for us being there for any extended period of time!

Jones and Isobel fight and he’s able to completely shatter her sword, which sends shards into Dallas (including his neck). Jones is able to grab the syringe that Liz was going to use on him and shoots it into Michael before he escapes with his son and leaves the rest of them to try and pick up the pieces.

Meanwhile, Maria has a vision of more than one coffin and knows that something bad is likely to happen. Kyle comes over to see her and they chat about her vision and what it could mean before Isobel calls him and tells him Dallas is dying. (We also get the confirmation that Kyle likes Isobel, which is a set up for next season… for sure!)

Kyle has everybody meet him down at Deep Sky, where he calls in a favor from Ramos (who’s his uncle, if we’ve forgotten, because everybody must be related in this series). Kyle and Isobel start to perform surgery to save Dallas and Heath completes the collection of people who still need to show up at the compound for now.

Jones takes Michael down to his weirdo bunker. Jones fucks with Michael about his feelings for his mother and it’s just parent issue city, population Michael Guerin. They end up fighting and Michael realizes that Jones is weaker than he let on from having everybody in his mindscape. Seeing the backdoor in, Michael gets into Jones’s head and sees how the murder sword really came to be.

The guys end up above ground at the junkyard and have a telekinetic fight over the sword, which ends in Michael getting stabbed! Jones is finally able to look into Michael's mind and sees Alex and the machine he needs.

At the bunker, Liz and Heath try to sort out the science of everything. Max brings some coffee and Liz tells him about the deal that Jones offered her (science that will bring back Jones’s ability to clone himself). They’re close to getting their side of things going, using Noah’s cells, except Liz is pretty certain it will take away Max’s powers once they’re able to use it. Max ends up chatting with Alex, which is so weird but lovely since they never have scenes together, while they’re trying to figure out the frequency stuff with the Lockhart machine.

Meanwhile, Kyle and Isobel have a moment or two while working on Dallas, who seems fine… until he doesn’t. Isobel grabs Heath and together they jump into Dallas’s mind to comfort him, because she uses her empathy powers and realizes that Dallas crashing isn’t entirely medical.

Kyle has most of the shards out and he and Isobel are flirty and dumb in the meantime. Lol. And then Dallas starts crashing. Isobel goes into his mind, because she feels that it’s not just medical.

Maria ends up finding Michael in the junkyard. She gives him some acetone and then uses a stapler (in the most absolutely batshit way, but okay) to seal up his stab wound so they can go try and stop Jones, who’s headed straight to Deep Sky to wreck some shit.

The episode ends with Jones in control of the Lockhart machine, forcing Liz to give him the serum she’d been cooking up, and dangling Ramos, Kyle, and Heath from a window outside Deep Sky’s immense height.

Roswell, New Mexico - Episode 3.13 “Never Let You Go”
Written by Christopher Hollier
Directed by Lance Anderson

All alien hands are on deck to get all three men back in the Deep Sky building and not let them die. Which they succeed at! Can you imagine if they didn’t? As everyone regroups to figure out how to deal with Liz being forced to give Jones the serum that will separate him and Max (on a time table, of course), Michael comes up with a plan to use the Lockhart machine and the radio towers to put Max and Jones in their correct bodies before they try to kill this season’s villain.

Isobel and Rosa go to Wild Pony so they can try and put together her mother’s sword - while walking in on the tail end of a conversation Maria has on the phone (a conversation she was having about her mother’s failing health). As all three women try to salvage the sword, they realize that the only way is with the power of three. Well, the power of three and the piece of jewelry that Michael made Maria to help save her from her visions since it was made from their magic alien flower. They are successful, giving them an even stronger weapon against Jones for later.

Meanwhile, Max goes to find Michael so he can convince Guerin to kill him (the way Dallas was asked to), should the science fail. Michael refuses and is able to pinpoint exactly what Max is afraid of, and that neither of them can run from the hard conversations they need to have with the people they love. (I love this scene and it’s a shame they don’t have more together!)

Dallas wakes up, much to the joy of everyone. Which leads to Liz and Kyle having breakthroughs about the science. Kyle thinks adrenaline will work, which they need to extract from Max. Liz ends up having to be the one to extract it and they have a truly great moment that proves romance rules!

Shortly after, Michael and Alex are together while Alex is trying to build a new machine. They’re able to have their moment proving romance rules, before they separate to get moving on the plan to stop Jones. Michael goes to Max and Liz where they tie him to the radio tower. Michael uses the machine Alex built and they’re able to get Jones and Max swapped.

Which means that Max stabs Ramos because Ramos had split off from the group and found Jones where he was hiding with the Lockhart machine. Max ends up healing Ramos and they head over to Deep Sky, where Kyle draws some blood to make sure everything is, biologically, set and ready to go.

Back at the radio tower, bats and their echolocation end up disrupting the frequencies enough for Jones to escape from the remnants of the cage from the cave and the handcuffs Michael made. Max and Jones end up playing body yo-yo back and forth, until Jones sets up a ring of fire around him, Liz, and the only thing that can end his and Max’s connection.

Michael, immune to fire, enters the ring and fights him, Isobel ends up shattering Jones’s sword, and then the group has to try and figure out who the real Max is. It’s a mess. Liz chooses right in the most wild moment imaginable, but Jones uses his final seconds to attack Max. However, Michael throws Max a piece of the broken sword and they’re able to stab and kill Jones.

With the villain defeated, Roswell, New Mexico does what it does best in a finale… wraps up storylines for the final ten minutes before dropping a bomb for next season. This finale it looks like this: Dallas joins alien club, so they can discuss Jones’s body and give him a bunch of the secrets of their kind. Kyle goes to find Rosa, who’s drawing in the park. He brings legal papers for Rosa’s new identity and some tickets for New York so she can go visit schools and start her new life. And then everybody couples up real cute like.

However, down in Mexico it seems like another alien has landed. Seems like Jones maybe did get the Lockhart machine to “ET phone home,” and we’re introduced to a new character who seems to know about the existence of the aliens. Played by Shiri Appleby, the original Liz in Roswell, no less!

I have no idea what that means for season four, but I’m ready to see what they have planned - and if they stick the landing.
