Marie Antoinette (2006)
Written and Directed by Sofia Coppola
Starring Kirsent Dunst, Jason Schwartman and Rip Torn
Description courtesy of The Ambler Theater:
Ever since the age of 15, when she interned with Chanel, Sofia Coppola has always had one foot firmly planted in the world of fashion. With MARIE ANTOINETTE being a period piece, Coppola worked closely with costume designer Milena Canonero, who recalls being handed a box of pastel-colored macarons as inspiration for the film’s vibrant ensembles. The candy-like costumes showcase Antoinette’s exuberant lifestyle and are historically accurate but with a fantastical twist to them. Antoinette’s journey in the film begins in pale yellows and blues, reflecting her youth and innocence. During her wilder years, her look changes into brighter pinks until the final act, where her gowns take on darker tones. Canonero won the Academy Award for Best Costume Design, and MARIE ANTOINETTE would retroactively be regarded as a staple fashion film due to its eye-catching visual aesthetic.
