I have been fascinated with the dead since I was a tiny Kicks. Some kids begged their parents to
take them to the playground- me, nah. I wanted to visit a graveyard. Is there anything more
interesting than ogling ornate headstones or taking comfy coffins out for a spin? In my mind
there is nothing else that could make for a more entertaining evening other than running into
an old friend. It’s always fun to see someone floating around when I am passing through and
hear all about the new afterlife.

When a guest wears out their welcome, I don’t believe one should feel anguish when their mind turns to murder. This especially rings true in the scenario of a visitor who chooses to arrive unannounced. If someone were to stopover to my home unexpectedly, anything goes. This person was not invited, instead they have invaded and they are owed nothing. However, because I am a kind, gentle soul ingrained with “good” manners, I would invite them to my dinner table, by candlelight I suppose, for a delicious spread with a side of arsenic.

Who is IAN KIMBLE?

Before I met this dude, I had a mental picture of a character drawn up based on his last name, KIMBLE. I had immediately thought of Dr. Richard Kimble - ya know the fugitive guy that Harrison Ford plays that chases down the one armed man that killed his wife. Yes! That dude. I had this entire story worked out - Ian was on the run from the law, but is not just any regular fugitive - nah, he is a FILM FUGITIVE. A guerilla style filmmaker - sidenote: For those not familiar with this term, it is someone characterized as shooting low budget indie flicks, with skeleton crews and using any props/equipment that they can get their paws on and of corpse there are no permits involved in this endeavor; i.e. Edward D. Wood Jr. - on the run from the law for filming in a city park without a permit.

“I don’t believe in love. Love isn’t real.” – said with dramatic teen inflection

Picture it! The Yurasits household Christmas day circa 1989. At the age of six years and two months, The Old Sport (aka Rosalie Kicks) is wee. She notices under the tree, a sparkly, glittery present under the tree. There it sits, she can’t take her eyes off it. The bow twinkles under the lights filling her with so much hope and glee. Much like a tiger, The Old Sport claws away the wrapping and slashes through the tissue paper only to reveal the most disappointing gift ever given to a child: clothes.

This was a similar sentiment I had after watching Max Minghella’s feature directorial debut, Teen Spirit.

There are things about my parents that are a mystery, particularly my dad. As a child, I was much closer to my mother. Part of this was due to spending countless hours working side by side at her parents’ farmer’s market slinging produce. The other reason was because she tried. For my mom, I think it has always been important for her to share with my brother and me where she came from. Being open like this has helped me understand why she does the things she does – or in some cases does not.

Imagine if your days were numbered, how would you want to spend them? Personally, I would have everything plotted and planned, basically a version of “me task list” on steroids. Every moment would need to be maximized and lived to the fullest before I transferred to the other side. My movie watchlist would need to be prioritized. The whole notion of “gotta watch ‘em all” would most definitely be out the window. Time is precious and therefore, my final hours be spent visiting all the carnivals, eating all the funnel cakes and spaghetti. All of this would lead up to my last day, when I would be carted into a darkened theater so that the last sight my eyes would be blessed with is my love, the silver screen . As I think this all through, I am starting to realize why it might be in my family’s and friends’ best interest to not inform me of of my imminent departure.

Within a few minutes of this pony flick starting I knew the entire premise and probably could have written this review without even finishing the movie. Not to suggest that the movie is not made well. I would not go as far to say that it is a masterpiece, but it is pretty damn good.

In the flick, Seven Chances, Buster plays James Shannon, a broker who is…broke. After he learns that his grandfather has passed away and that he is the sole heir set to inherit seven million dollars, his financial problems seem to be a thing of the past. The only catch is, that in order to receive the loot he has to be married by 7:00 pm on his twenty-seventh birthday. No big deal, except that he is set to turn twenty-seven in twenty-four hours. To say this creates a mad dash to the alter is quite the understatement. As the time ticks away, James’ desperation to find a bride, any bride, grows.

What a thrill it would be to have the opportunity to hang out in your favorite flick and leave all your troubles in the rearview. When I close my eyes, I can picture myself grabbing a milkshake with George McFly or terrifying people in the shower with my pal Norman…oops, I mean Motherrr.

The character Anthony (Tom Burke) remarks this line to Julie (Honor Swinton Byrne aka Baby Tilda) somewhere about halfway through the movie. Honestly, I can’t recall the exact moment, however, the timing is not terribly important. When this line was said, though, I could not help but think that maybe I had invited the writer/director Joanna Hogg to torture me.

For Veera, who goes by V, her method of escape doesn’t involve airfare. Instead, it may require medieval garb or a styrofoam sword. When life gets hard, sometimes you gotta LARP (live-action role playing).

I know I’m going to haunt someday.

Being a ghost is in my DNA. Given the opportunity to have a ghost life, I have yet to discover the downside. I was raised by wolves. Therefore, I had to rely on movies to teach me about the facts of life. The movies have only helped prove: A ghost life is a good life. So when it comes to afterlife planning, I have found no better tutelage than my film library. Take, for example, Beyyyla Lugosi as Dracula. If it wasn’t for him, I would never know of the various bunks that are available when it is time to go sleepies. One needs to make sure their coffin is velvet lined for comfort. May even be a good idea to try it out beforehand as a bed. Take it for a test spin...before it is too late.

I couldn’t help but see this film as a quasi public service announcement. The message being, the life of a Queen, just plain sucks (well maybe, except for the WIG selection). Josie Rourke’s two hour and four minute directorial debut is based on the untold TRUE story of the relationship between Mary Stuart (Saoirse Ronan) and Queen Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie).
