Now Presenting: Moviejawn's Summer 2020 Issue
by Benjamin Leonard, Best Boy
Greetings movie friends! As I’m sure most of you know, in addition to our website which mostly covers new movie reviews, we also make a quarterly print zine. I thought it’d be fun to give everyone a quick glance at all the films that are covered in our most recent issue (which focuses on circuses, carnivals and fairs) and where you can find them. Step right up! to follow the links for the titles and it’ll take you to a listing of where it can be found (mostly powered by JustWatch.com).
-Rosalie “Kicks” the issue off with her article “One Last Ride”, in which she discusses her afterlife options and Carnival of Souls
-Next up is Fiona Underhill’s look at “Running Away to Join the Circus”, where she discusses The Greatest Show on Earth and Circus of Horrors
-Then we have Liz Locke (of Cinema Sips) with a delightful drink pairing for the film Billy Rose's Jumbo
-I follow that up discussing how “Life as a Carny Shouldn’t be So Rough” for Gary Busey’s Carny
-Ryan Silberstein of Cinema76 talks about “Murders Most Fun-Fair” in Brighton Rock and Rollercoaster
-Rosalie “pops” back in to discuss Buster Keaton’s Balloonatic
-Ashley Jane highlights a scene from Orson Welles’s The Lady from Shanghai
-Zoe Crombie looks at “Disability at the Circus” via Tod Browning’s Freaks, The Unholy Three and The Unknown
-Meanwhile, Nikk Nelson attempts to describe the kangaroo boxing spectacle that is 1978’s Matilda
-Rosalie asks you to “Step Right Up for Murder” while discussing the films Berserk! and Nightmare Alley
-Then she gives you a fun little craft project inspired by Lili
-Judson Cade Pedigo talks about houses of horror in “The Other Scary Movie”
-Stacey Osbeck takes a nostalgic trip back to her childhood discussing Big
-Next we have a crossword puzzle with questions related to Strangers on a Train
-Hunter Bush begs you to “Hold Me Tight” as he talks about Tobe Hooper’s The Funhouse
-Anthony Glassman gives us a tawdry peek into “A Night at the Vampire Circus”
-Suze L. Cima describes her trip “Going Back to Adventureland”
-And Matthew Crump wraps it all up telling us “Why You Should Never Watch The Devil’s Carnival ALONE” which, of course, includes some discussion of Alleluia! and Repo! as well.
Well, I hope that gets you excited for this next issue. Maybe you can even watch some of them ahead of time while you wait for your zine to arrive. Thanks for reading!
*As a bonus, while it wasn’t written about, I mentioned Black Orpheus (1959) in my letter from the editor.
